“There is no doubt that the IPC and the Paralympic Movement would not be where it is today without the support and cooperation of the IOC. Since our first formal agreement in 2000, the Paralympic Games and the movement as a whole have surpassed all recognition. The agreement will bring financial stability to the CPI for at least the next 14 years, which in turn will benefit the entire Paralympic movement. The new agreement builds on the current partnership and cooperation agreements signed prior to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of an agreement signed by the IPC President, Andrew Parsons and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet will work with several other like-minded organizations to launch a global communication campaign around next year`s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to change the overall attitude towards disability and advance the human rights agenda. “It is appropriate that this agreement be signed here in South Korea, given that the Olympic and Paralympic Games met in south Korea in 1988 as a sporting event in Seoul. Thirty years later, we are here in PyeongChang for the biggest Paralympic Winter Games to date, with a record number of athletes, countries, broadcasters and media. Andrew Parsons, President of the IPC, said: “Strengthening relations with the IOC and securing the future of the IPC and the Paralympic movement was my number one priority when I was elected IPC President last September. That is why I am pleased that we have signed a new long-term historic partnership agreement and we can now look forward to exciting cooperation. As part of the agreement, the two organizations will work together to develop and implement mutually beneficial, inclusive strategic communication campaigns. The two organizations also hope to cooperate in important events such as the IPC Inclusion Summit and the Global Disability Summit and explore areas of common interest in the areas of strategy, policy development, research and communication.
